March 2026 - Convention and Hall of Honor

In 1950, the first Grossmont HS Nominating Convention took place in the 1937 Old Gym. Modeled after the Democratic and Republican National Nominating Conventions, the purpose of the GHS convention was to narrow the roster of candidates running for ASB office.

In Spring 2025, an eager group of ASB class members revived the convention, which stopped in 2020 due to COVID.  Their efforts resulted in a successful rebirth of a beloved GHS tradition.  This year’s convention was held on February 27th in the Old Gym, the location of all previous conventions.

ASB class member Abigail Payne shares that “This year’s theme was Candy Land, the childhood board game! We had 24 candidates and 379 delegates, including ASB executives and delegation leaders.

A highlight of the Convention was the energy of the student body. As a student leader, I have noticed the challenge of getting high schoolers involved or excited about school/school events, especially in a technological era with immediate entertainment on a cell phone. At the Convention, everyone was dressed up and with their delegations.

The students were excited to vote on who will represent them in ASB. It was awesome to see students ranging from those who always “show up” to those who had never been involved before sharing their excitement about the Convention.

Convention connects Grossmont to its past, making it unique from other schools.  Along with a team of my friends, I have been in charge of Convention for the past two years.  We have dedicated hours to Convention, from learning about its meaning and history in the GHS Museum to planning every decorative detail, such as how to make 3D representations of candy.

In two years, we have seen a growth in participation and enthusiasm from the student body. That is the real reason behind all the events that ASB “puts on”. We want people to have the opportunity to get involved and have fun. Convention is the perfect mix of fun and excitement, along with a real opportunity to practice democracy as a school and allow our students to have a voice.”
