February 2026 - LMC Elective Fair
Over the past 105 years, the elective classes offered to Grossmont students have certainly changed. In 1921, with no electives offered, the junior class published the first yearbook and the senior class performed the first play. Quickly, elective classes multiplied. The 1925 yearbook documents the school’s electives: the yearbook El Recuerdo; the school newspaper Hill Chatter; commercial classes-typewriting and shorthand; domestic science-sewing and cooking; shop-auto mechanics and wood-working; Boys and Girls Glee Clubs; Orchestra; the service club Girls’ League, and more.
Today’s Foothillers are offered an amazing number of choices to grow academically, artistically, personally, and culturally. February 19th, all 9-11th grade students visited the Elective Fair in the 1937 Old Gym during their English classes to explore next year’s electives.
This year, these classes had a “booth” at the Fair:
2D Art and AP Drawing, 3D Design, AME Pathway (Arts Media and Entertainment), Photography
AP Classes: Art History, Biology, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Psychology, US History, CCAP (Community College and AP) Chemistry 120, CCAP Statistics, Government and Politics.
CTE (Childhood Education)Pathway, ICT (Web Development and Global), Pathway, Engineering, Multicultural Literature, Physiology, Physics, Spanish
Unified PE, Sports Medicine, AVID, Foothiller Pride, Upward Bound, NJROTC, Yearbook, Counseling
Band and Orchestra, Dance, Theater 1, Technical Theater, Vocal Music, Songwriting and Recording Class
After the fair, Carolyn Jungman, Photography & Digital Arts teacher, reflected, “The Elective Fair….has grown over the past few years and now boasts more than 35 programs! It's largely student-run, allowing freshman, sophomores, and juniors to interact with current students from each elective class. It's a great display of how passionate our students are about their electives and gets everyone excited for next year!”
Several students also shared their thoughts about the benefits of electives.
Israel Rosas: "The Elective Fair was a good chance to see what opportunities you have for next year.…the teachers were helpful in choosing what elective you wanted for next year. I worked at the 3D Design table with Ms. Pagarigan. It was fun to meet new people and see what everyone's interests are."
Lacy Sparkman-Ned: "…. I was able to meet new faces and share my experiences in the band program. I also helped at the AME (Arts, Media, & Entertainment) table. I'm in both programs so it was nice to be able to inspire underclassmen to join each program."
Kaiden Abernathy: "It was very community-based. It … helped me improve my communication abilities and public speaking."
Dilenny Gomez-Cueto: "The Elective Fair helped me shape who I am by picking electives, and it truly reminded me of how I first started out. I'm glad to be the person I am now." Dilenny Gomez-Cueto
We wonder what electives will be offered to Foothillers 105 years from now.
