2024 New Buildings
Over the past 15 years, Grossmont High has undergone a dramatic transformation of its physical plant, which began in 2009 with the opening of the new Boys and Girls PE Facility, followed by the amazing new buildings housing Science, Child Development, Humanities, Automotive Technology, Student Support Services, Art, and Performing Arts.
These improvements would not have been possible without the support of the GUHSD community through its approval of Proposition U and Proposition BB. Before this flurry of construction, the last new building was the “New” Gym and Band Room built in 1970.
March 5th, the school dedicated the opening of welcome additions to Grossmont’s physical plant:
Sports Medicine: Provides a state-of-the-art space for Grossmont’s Sports Medicine Pathway, with simulation spaces, treatment tables, and exercise rehabilitation equipment
Weight Room and Athletic Equipment Storage: Collegiate-style weight room with top-of- the-line strength training equipment with funding by the Chargers through their Champions Grant
Food Services Facilities: Modern Food Services building has expansive serving stations, a walk-in refrigerator and freezer, and the capacity to serve 1,000+ students within 15 minutes
New Home-side Bleachers, Press Box, and ADA Access: Replacing bleachers built by volunteers in the 1980s.
Two New Classrooms house the relocated GHS Museum: Spacious new classrooms currently house the relocated Grossmont High School Museum – the keystone of Grossmont High School’s vast alumni network which provides vital support for the school’s instructional and extracurricular programs.
Amazingly, these new buildings replace two buildings built in 1950, the Cafeteria and the Girls PE Facility, which most recently housed the GHS Museum and the weight room.
Principal Dan Barnes began the dedication ceremony with these words: “Today marks a significant milestone in the journey of Grossmont High School as we gather to celebrate – the dedication ceremony and ribbon-cutting event for our newest facilities.
It is with great pride and excitement that we welcome you to see these state-of-the-art facilities, made possible by the support and trust of the voters of East County and the GUHSD School Board. These buildings, along with all of our renovated and new buildings, stand as a testament to our commitment to providing our students with the best possible learning environment and, in many ways, unparalleled opportunities to excel both academically and athletically.
Thank you to our GUHSD Governing board and the East County voters; we passed three bonds to help modernize our schools. Grossmont truly has benefited from this and is thankful.
“I would like to welcome Connie and Lynn Baer, our most ardent supporters and the Museum and Alumni Directors. They have done so much to support GHS students and staff by teaching the traditions and history of GHS so our students know where we began… to better understand where we are going.
The GHS Museum is a place that remembers our traditions and values our history. The museum invites alumni to connect back to Grossmont in a huge way, not only through donations of items to the museum, but also through financial support. Their efforts in fundraising for our programs and connecting our alumni back to GHS… have been a huge success. These efforts support many programs and scholarships on our campus. With alumni funding, we are able to offer 12 different senior scholarships, and multiple classroom mini-grants each year.
I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our district leadership for their unwavering support of Grossmont High School. Their dedication and vision have been instrumental in bringing this, and all of our projects, to fruition since our first bond in 2009, and we are incredibly fortunate to have such strong advocates for education in our community. Together, we have built more than just buildings; we have created a legacy of excellence that will inspire generations of students to come for the next 103 Years.”
Throughout the dedication, speakers echoed these comments, with the greatest enthusiasm expressed by two students, ASB President Abby Cott and Raihana Azizi, a Sports Medicine Pathway student.
These facilities will impact thousands of students for years to come, and for them, we are grateful.
Grossmont Girls Historic 2023-24 Basketball Team
This year’s team’s achievements have been amazing. Coached by Head Coach Grace Campbell and Assistant Coach Jahray Perkins, the team roster included Dahlia Blake, Senior; Addyson Clark, Junior; Marissa Farace, Sophomore; Jaliyah Fleming, Freshman; Kellan Hayden, Junior; Faythe Jordan, Junior; Zoe Price, Senior; Aakash Price, Freshman; and Ariona Simpson, Freshman.
First, the team won the Hills League with an 8-2 record, before ending the year with an overall record of 27-9, due to its post-season achievements.
In the San Diego County Division 1 CIF competition, the girls defeated Mt. Carmel, San Marcos, and Oceanside, before losing to Cathedral Catholic in the final game.
In Division 4 Southern California CIF competition, the Lady Foothillers defeated Santa Paula, Crenshaw, Newbury Park, and Fallbrook to win the Southern California CIF Regional Championship, which sent them to the California State Championship game in Sacramento.
March 9th, the state championship game was played in Sacramento at the Sacramento Kings Arena. The team lost to the number one seed St. Bernard’s. Nonetheless, it was an amazing achievement for the team, an achievement to make all Foothillers proud.
During their post season competition, The San Diego Union Tribune recognized sisters Zoe Price and Aakash Price as Athletes of the Week for their achievements.
Reflecting on the season, Coach Grace Campbell, shares ,“Only a small percentage of high school athletes get to participate on the State Championship Stage; we were blessed enough to be a part of that small percentage.
Our journey and the experiences are something we will never forget! Our student athletes sacrificed and dedicated countless hours, and all of their hard work and dedication paid off.”
Also, it’s an honor to have brought the school its first CIF championship for girls basketball in school history and now the first state regional championship and state runners up.”
The following Monday, Principal Dan Barnes shared with the staff, “Foothillers, our CIF Southern Regional State Champion Girls Basketball team wrapped up a historic run on Saturday at the State Championship in Sacramento. Even though the result was not what we hoped, the athletes played hard, gave it their best, and led with class and heart.
At the beginning of Friday’s Glow in the Dark Assembly, we will recognize them. Come to celebrate the team!”
The achievements of this team will reverberate for years, inspiring other athletes and students to strive to achieve the goals that matter to them.
