Sandy LaPlant GHS Math Teacher, 1970-2010

In 1970 Sandy LaPlant became a member of the Math Department. Over the next 40 years, Sandy distinguished herself as an outstanding educator and supportive colleague.

Academically, Sandy taught the whole spectrum of math classes including Algebra, Pre-Calculus, Calculus. She was one of the most organized teachers on staff; every day was planned out to the minute. One colleague remembers students describing her “as a teacher who made math easy to understand.”

From 2002-2006, Sandy served as the Math Department Chairperson. Also, Sandy was an adjunct math instructor at Grossmont College from 1998 to 2012, teaching one or two classes each semester.

In the yearbooks, several times Sandy was frequently selected by the students for her positive traits, such as “Most Dedicated” and “Most likely to wear blue and gold on Friday” to which Sandy commented, “Wearing blue and gold signifies my encouragement of school spirit and unity.” Not surprisingly, in 1988 and 2005, the student body selected Sandy as their Golden Apple Teacher of the Year.

During her 40 year career, Sandy influenced so many students and colleagues. One recalls, “My memories of Sandy go back to summer school before 9th grade. She taught algebra for 8th graders in a way that laid a foundation for future math mastery. Sandy wanted everyone to excel and modeled what a math teacher could be: accessible and kind. Sandy is truly the role model for my personal career path. I was so fortunate to be her student and eventually her coworker at Grossmont.”

In Spring 2026, Bill surprised us with a wonderful tribute to the museum. Jackson Naah, Class of 2028, frequently visits the Museum. Jackson plays his banjo on Fridays at the La Mesa Farmers’ Market.

Class of 1959 Alumni Kitty Gregg Kope, Nancy Berg Lamb, Sue Cosby Kaplan, and Marti Ballance Guarin have been getting together yearly since 1987. They stand in front of the 2 drawings of GHS they inspired Artist Bob Happ to create for Grossmont High School.
