Gordy Shields, GHS Counselor

Gordon "Gordy" Shields of El Cajon , California passed away on Sunday, June 30th at the age of 95. Gordon is survived by his loving children son Gordon Scott Shields of Lodi California, daughters Valerie Shields, Susan McKeown both from San Diego. Gordon was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on April 20,1918 to Leopold and Nellie Shields. When Gordon was a young man he joined the United States Navy and after being released from the navy Gordon went back to school and got his master's degree in teaching. He taught at Grossmont High School for many years and also became a student counselor at Grossmont College.

Fred Helm, GHS Science Teacher, Class of 1964

Fred passed away at home on April 11, 2013, after a long battle with skin cancer. He attended Brown and San Diego Military Academies, Lakeside Junior High and Grossmont HS. He graduated from SDSU with a BS in Biology and Math and Master's in Education. Fred taught at Grossmont High School for 35 years before retiring in 2004. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathryn, his son Fred Helm III, daughter Jennifer Grubbs, five grandkids, brother Eric Helm, sister Sara DuVal, and many other relatives and friends.

Michael "Mike" Farrar, GHS English Teacher

Gilbert Michael Farrar, born July 1, 1932 in San Diego, CA, passed away on May 6, 2013 at his home in El Cajon, CA. Mike was the son of Gilbert Francis Farrar and Frances Margaret Farrar and brother of Gail Walker (R.D.). He is survived by his wife of 48 years Judith Elaine Farrar (Wise); children Cassandra Gegax, Andy Farrar (Brenda), Stephanie McDonald (Mark), and Ryan Farrar (Elizabeth); six grand- children; sisters-in-law Arlene Wise, Dee Tucker (Ray); brother-in-law Dennis Wise; and numerous nephews and nieces. Mike was a native San Diegan who graduated from San Diego State College in 1955. He taught for many years at Grossmont High School (1961-1977) and Granite Hills High School (1977-1996). A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 13th, at 4:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of El Cajon with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the First Presbyterian Church of El Cajon.
